With his position on the unconscious, Freud taught us how each of us had a personality we were unaware of, an unconfessed projection of our conscious "self." He vividly showed us the secret face of our other "I," and taught us how this cursed brother, whom we do not want to recognize, was formed and developed, a brother that group psychology has recorded for centuries in the myth of the "double." This second self, burdened by guilt, repressed in the shadows of forgetfulness - yet always alive, dictating our actions without us knowing - makes us "volens nolens" brothers of the most backward primitive, the most ruthless criminal, the most frantic neurotic. We are not dealing with an idea of moral brotherhood, but with a biological given. By revealing to us an inner destiny that replaces the external Fate of ancient tragedy, explaining how and why the drama of Oedipus and Hamlet is played out within all of us, Freud provided us with a new perspective on our human fate.
