Such a disorder of the dynamic balance of the nervous system – an uneven distribution of increased excitation – represents the mental aspect of emotions. The emotions that are “active” or “weak” compensate for the heightened excitation with motor discharge.
Shouts and jumps of joy, increased muscle tone in case of anger, angry words, and revengeful acts—all these allow excitation to flow into movements. Mental pain releases it through labored breathing and a act of discharge: sobs and tears. It is a common experience that these reactions reduce excitation and provide relief.
The common language expresses this with phrases like “breaking into tears,” “crying,” etc. What we unload is nothing more than increased cortical excitation.
