The term "Confessional Theology" is not new. It is a well-established term used to denote the subject or science that deals with issues and problems related to the administration (in all respects) of the Mystery of Holy Confession.
Therefore, at first glance, it is possible to provide the following definition, which specifies the content and purpose of Confessional Theology. Namely: "Confessional Theology is the subject or the practical branch of Theology that presents the principles and methods according to which the work of Holy Confession must be carried out by the Spiritual Father."
But the main problem here is not so much the definition of the content and purpose of Confessional Theology as the "scientific" or "didactical" character of Confessional Theology. That is, many raise the question: Is Confessional Theology really a science? Or is it possible that the way in which the spiritual work of the confessor priest is performed can become the subject of "scientific" study and teaching?
