In a fleeting period of fourteen years, between two world wars, the Bauhaus school of art and design in Germany changed the face of modernity. With utopian ideas for the future, the school developed a pioneering fusion of visual arts, crafts, and technology that was applied to painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theater, and installations. As much a personal community as a public collective, the Bauhaus was originally founded by Walter Gropius (1883–1969) and included members like Josef and Anni Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, Marianne Brandt, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Among its three successive locations in Weimar, Dessau, and Berlin, the school promoted delightful and creative exchanges between teachers and students, all varied in their artistic stylistic preferences but united in their idealism and interest in a "holistic" work of art across different practices and mediums. This book celebrates the adventurous innovation of the Bauhaus movement, both as a pioneer in the development of modernism and as a model of artistic education, where absolute freedom of creative expression and pioneering ideas led to functional and beautiful creations.
