Description

A panoramic book on European Medieval History to learn about "truths" that historical research overlooks or suppresses. The medieval world of the West is not as well known in our country as, for example, the medieval Greek history of the Byzantine Empire or other historical periods.

The fall of the Roman Empire led to the decline of the economy and, consequently, to cultural decline. This is why the Middle Ages have been referred to as the "Dark Ages." However, this period, which lasted about 1000 years, is characterized by some critical moments of change for the developments in European history.

By the end of this period, Europe was a different world than at its beginning and had shaped the complex identity it has largely maintained since then. Through small and accessible texts, the reader can explore interesting and largely unknown aspects related to the military operations of the time, the Crusades, the kings, the Church, the economy, the spiritual and artistic activity, the great geographical discoveries, and so on, which are foundational to the emergence of the modern world.

When the King of the Franks Clovis died (511), the kingdom was divided, according to custom, among his four sons. Of these, Chlodomer died leaving two sons aged 11 and 10, who lived with their grandmother, Queen Clotilde. A year later, their uncles King Childebert and King Clothar asked Clotilde to send them the boys so they could ensure their ascent to the throne. She, excited by the prospect of her grandsons inheriting their father's kingdom, sent them. However, they, acting deceitfully, captured the boys and sent Clotilde a servant holding a pair of scissors and a naked sword. The servant, conveying the message from her sons, asked her if she wished her grandsons to live shaved, which meant they would be excluded from royal office, or to be slaughtered. Clotilde, overwhelmed by anger and sorrow, replied without hesitation that she preferred to see them dead rather than shaved. The outcome was tragic. The two boys were brutally slaughtered by Clothar.
