My five-year-old twin boys love horses... So I was looking for a book for their age with horses as the main characters.

I really hit the jackpot... Not only is the main hero a horse, but this particular book is the result of a collaboration between my favorite Iris Samartzi and Antonis Papatheodoulou.

Every time I see these two names together on a children's book, the wonderful final result is guaranteed!

A horse, "Kalloni," tells us the story of her life. Through her narration, we realize how difficult, exhausting, and often unfair the lives of horses are.

Especially in the old days, when people relied on horses for many tasks, such as pulling heavy carriages, working in the fields, and of course riding them, even if they didn't have the knowledge.

We see the hard life of these wonderful animals through Kalloni's eyes. The lack of sensitivity, the strictness, and their mistreatment! But also their need and effort to survive!

Inevitably, our minds also go to the mistreatment of all other animals, which unfortunately still exists even today.

The originality of this book is that the protagonist tells their own story, but the protagonist is not a human, but a horse!

So it is a book in the horse language, only the author translated it into ours, so that we can understand it too.

This alone is an element that excites the imagination of young readers, especially those who love horses!

By reading Kalloni's story, they learn how difficult the life of horses was in the old days. They gain empathy and sensitivity towards horses and, by extension, towards all animals!

Although my five-year-old boys love this book, the texts are quite long and tire them a little. To keep their interest, I skip some parts or tell them in my own words.

Fortunately, most people's perception of horses has changed... However, I was troubled because even today there are some who still treat animals in the same unacceptable way.

A phrase from the book that touched my heart is: "Often people, when they are having a good time, forget those who work for that purpose. Animals and people." A great truth...

The Black Beauty is a touching and sensitive book from the series "Small, Great Classics"... I will definitely get the rest of the books...
