Description

Like cherries, evil.
You take one from the basket, two or three rise up.

The phenomenon of banditry dominated the modern Greek state for almost a century, until the mid-1930s. At its core was the conflict between tradition and modernity, and specifically the extreme confrontation of the centralized state with the autonomous communities of the mountainous regions.

In Epirus during the first decades of the 20th century, at the peak of this conflict, Giannis and Thymios Dovas seek revenge for the brutal murder of their father and then follow the only path left to them: that of illegality, uncompromising violence, and confrontation with state institutions. Bound by the blood of their dozens of victims and trained to survive next to each other even in their fiercest conflicts, they remain united not only in their prime—when, with the deliberate collaboration of "urban state" factors, they become a terror to the entire region—but also in their decline and inevitable end.

The story of the Bandits is inspired by true events from the lives of the Retzos brothers (Retzaioi), combining noir atmosphere with ethnography, mafia action with the Greek version of western culture, the bandit "code of honor" with the corruption of power, historical narrative with modern forms of organized crime. However, at its core are two outlaws, whom all social strata helped and "used" out of fear, respect, or interest, without foreseeing their limitless trajectory. Two people with a tragic fate, who managed to climb to the most inaccessible peak of the mountain and, instead of enjoying the view from above, plunged into the void, longing for the addictive sensation of the ascent.
