Description

Among the many resilient military leaders who played a key role in the Greek Revolution, Theodoros Kolokotronis undoubtedly stands out. A legend to his companions and a terror to his enemies, the Elder of the Morea emerged as the most emblematic figure of the Greek War of Independence.

He led the revolution in the Morea, organized and implemented significant military successes against the Turks, and when needed, he preserved and guaranteed, with his prestige, the unity of the Greeks.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE SERIES

The Greek Revolution is rightly categorized among the great revolutions that marked the age of Modernity. The completion of two hundred years since its outbreak has understandably heightened the interest of modern Greeks to learn about its key characteristics.

This new series aims toward this direction. By portraying the portraits of five of the leading figures of the Greek Revolution (Theodoros Kolokotronis, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Petrobey Mavromichalis, Rigas Feraios, Bouboulina) and analyzing five of the main themes related to it (The plan and outbreak of the Revolution, The constitutions of the Struggle, Internal strife and disputes, From the Massacre of Chios to the Exodus of Missolonghi, The role of the Great Powers in the Revolution), it aspires to contribute to public history and the dialogue about the character and forms of the Greek Revival.

The volumes of the series are authored by distinguished historians and specialists, adhering to the rules of scientific research.

The participation of the crowd was so great – according to estimates, approaching around 10,000 people – that while the head of the procession was approaching the temple, the end was still at the eastern edge of Ermu Street. Only the eulogies lasted more than three hours. On behalf of the royal palaces, the deceased was bid farewell by the Councilor of the Supreme Court, Panagiotis Soutsos, while Konstantinos of Oikonomos did the same. Athenian soil received into its depths the man who perhaps more than anyone else had marked the struggle of the Greeks for freedom. It was the end of an era and the beginning of another. The world of the Greek Revolution was bidding farewell to its leader. The modern Greek national state welcomed into the pantheon of its heroes one of its most emblematic figures.
