What do television news have in common with cafes, morning shows with women's gatherings "for coffee," soap operas with fairy tales, traditional games and dance with the corresponding television contests? Such issues are studied and analyzed in this work, representations of some events of contemporary popular culture on television. The survival of aspects of "traditional" culture is sought, as well as new expressions of it as contemporary popular culture, in various television programs. The analysis considers the television audience as an active body and not as a passive consumer of cultural products. It posits that involvement in the process of viewing is a symbolic act of creativity.
The "construction" of the work is based on the theory of "uses and gratifications" and the thinkers of Cultural Studies. It is structured into three chapters: The first discusses issues related to the study of customs from Folklore, social phenomena, and the "construction" of reality by television. The second presents the socio-historical conditions of the 50 years from 1966 to 2016, for obvious reasons. The third analyzes 19 topics related to the content of the first paragraph. It is complemented by a Bibliography and an Index of selected folkloric terms and programs referred to in the analysis.
