Description

Since 1844, when their deep friendship began, Friedrich Engels has been the inseparable companion, collaborator, and comrade of Karl Marx. Beside Marx, he played a crucial role in the development of scientific socialism, contributing fruitfully in all its fields: political economy, history, and philosophy.

His main works, such as The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845), The Peasant War in Germany (1850), Anti-Dühring (1878), Utopian and Scientific Socialism (1880), The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State (1884), etc., are significant milestones in the development of Marxist theory.

In this collection, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of his birth, the reader will find several untranslated into Greek and lesser-known but equally important texts by Engels. They span all stages of his writing activity, from his youth, when he was a left Hegelian, to his mature period, providing an image of the breadth of his intellect and sharpness.

Among other things, it includes: poems and literary critiques from Engels' youth; his early critique of Schelling's mystical-irrational idealism; writings and speeches from the revolutionary years of 1848-49 and the immediately preceding period; his analyses of the national and democratic issues of the time, developments in Russia, free trade, etc.; excerpts from the preparatory materials of Anti-Dühring; important letters on the transitional program, historical materialism, and issues of art.

In his introductory essay, Christos Kefalis discusses the overall intellectual journey and work of Engels. He highlights his contributions to enriching historical and dialectical materialism, discusses his political elaborations, and his crucial contribution to the formation of the communist movement, which makes him timelessly one of the classics of Marxism.
