Description

There are times when I seek those dense pathways of the mind, not so much to roll back as to understand all this emotional burden for a vast map that defines me. And within this map lie all that has shaped me and all that propels me forward.

The best moment is when time, the past and the future, converge in a moment, in an imperceptible vibration, known only to you, and this impression needs neither space nor light. It is born from the sense of a vast and rich vista that is not you, not by any means. You simply carry it; you are like the turtle that bears its shell, you are also a bit like a cave covered in skin and hair.

Excerpt from the book Memories, experiences, people, books, buildings… In this personal narrative, Nikos Vatopoulos unfolds a map through the flow of associative writing and leads us to an urban geography that is simultaneously a study of the cycles of time and the power of memory. He gradually composes an alternative vision of Athens in recent decades, with elements of biography, personal and urban, delivering us a hybrid chronicle.

The street of Patision, straight, shimmering, flickering. Under its yellow lights on that spring evening, during one of my solitary walks, I felt I could go far. And, on the other hand, as much as I had the desire to distance myself and get lost, I also wanted to curl up, become a dot, an invisible speck. For a moment, I wished I could hide in a cinema, those with blue curtains, silver stars, and ushers with aprons and programs in hand, and watch again and again in an endless loop the movie 1900. It was a strange yet completely familiar desire that was born there, like a leaf in a crack of time.
