Excellent. If I were asked to make a list of 15-30 books that every person should have read in order to be informed about political, legal, and institutional issues, the book "Political Thinkers of Modern Times" would definitely be one of them, and in fact one of the first ones. This is because it explains concepts and ideas in a simple, clear, and enjoyable way that other academic textbooks struggle to do through dozens of dense pages of analysis. Of course, this book is not a replacement for those textbooks, it is simply a pleasant and easy-to-read introduction to what its title suggests.

Description & Specifications

This book seeks to outline the most significant contributions to the dialogue of political humanism and individualistic liberalism, the two currents that shaped modern political thought, the reflective and systematic inquiries regarding the coexistence of people in organized groups that were formulated during the post-Medieval period.

The goal of the analysis is to restore the historical context of each of these contributions, so that the intentions and aspirations—political and ethical—of the thinkers being discussed can be understood, particularly regarding the formulation of their political arguments. Only in this way can the character of the symbolic expression adopted by the thinkers be perceived to communicate with their cultural environment, and their message deciphered with their own contexts rather than our own, which often lead us into misunderstandings.

The biographical method was chosen as the key to historically restoring the meaning of political thought, as it allows for the integration of authors and their works into their historical context, thereby revealing the political circumstances that shaped the intentions of their arguments. Using this method, the intellectual profiles and political ideas of Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Burke, Bentham, Mill, and Tocqueville are presented.

The presentation of their ideas is framed by extensive bibliographical compilations of sources and aids, making the book a tool for further research and deepening understanding. For this seventh edition of the book, the entire text has been revised and enriched in many places, and the bibliography has once again been meaningfully updated, so that the reader receives an edition complete with the latest acquisitions of research in the chapters of political theory presented within its pages.
