Description

Description

This book is both a statement and an ongoing work. It is a statement because it highlights a research and bibliographic gap. The reflection on the role and impact of the state, geopolitics, and war has been neglected in Greek historical, sociological, and political science over the last three decades. This fact has implications for the understanding of the "Greek case." Without recognizing the historical significance of these issues and without systematically studying the interactions with other social fields, we lose important knowledge about our national evolution.

With this need in mind, the contributors of the volume address major issues of Greek politics and the state. The book outlines the broad strokes of our national evolution through a multifaceted analysis that focuses on the key actors of the 20th century in Greece: social transformation, the state, the nation. This multidimensional approach comes at a historically critical moment for Greece. We are clearly living in a liminal phase, where the new era has not yet shown its basic direction. In these troubled times, Greece will seek its path while confronting the thorny problems inherited from the 20th century as well as its recent crisis past.

Regarding the series "PATHS OF HISTORY" (Series editor: Kostas Kostis): History is the word we have chosen from the ancient Greek intellectual arsenal to bring together the past, the present, and the future. It is not accidental, therefore, that the way we understand the past necessarily shapes our ability to comprehend the present, as well as our efforts to predict the future. In this logic, the "Paths of History" series aims to include books that share history as a common denominator, without necessarily being history books.

Economics, social theory, political science, and anthropology are included in the perspective of the series to the extent and degree that they utilize a historical understanding of time. Furthermore, the authors of the books in the series discuss their topics in a way that seeks to transcend the traditional certainties of their field, thereby satisfying two of the basic demands of their craft, which are questioning and innovation.

The contributors of the volume: Spyros Vlachopoulos, Giannis Voulgaris, Tasos Giannitsis, Vasilis K. Gounaris, Andromachi Theodoropoulou, Lena Korma, Manolis Koumas, Alexandros-Andreas Kyrtsis, Kostas Kostis, Vasilios N. Makridis, Manos Matsagganis, Konstantina E. Botsiou, Angelos Dalahanis, Thanos Ntokos, Marilena Papadaki, Amalia Pappa, Mogens Pelt, Spyridon G. Ploumidis, Sotiris Rizas, Tasos Sakellaropoulos, Kalliopi Spanou, Dimitris A. Sotiropoulos, Dimitris Tziovas, Panagiotis Tsoukas, Konstantinos Filis, Alexis Frangiadis, Evandhis Chatzivasileiou.
