Christopher M. Woodhouse was twenty-two years old when World War II broke out. He enlisted in the British Royal Artillery in October 1939 and by 1944 had risen to the rank of Colonel.
He first arrived in Greece as an officer of the British Military Mission and participated in operations until the evacuation of Crete in the spring of 1941. He left Crete accompanied by his commander, Brigadier Eddie Mayers, for mainland Greece.
On November 25, 1942, together with members of the British Military Mission and men from Aris Velouchiotis and Napoleon Zervas, they blew up the Gorgopotamos bridge, an action considered one of the most significant acts of resistance during World War II.
Woodhouse, as a knowledgeable Greek speaker, developed extensive activities in Greece, coming into contact with many key figures in the developments and forming firsthand opinions about the events and critical incidents that marked the country's history.
In 1948, while the civil war raged, he published his book The Apple of Discord in English, which has since become a reference point. Seven decades later, the book remains highly engaging.
From the regime of August 4, the heroic epic of Albania, the German occupation, resistance organizations, and the Lebanon Conference to the liberation, the December events, and all that led to the bloody civil war, the author details the critical events of a turbulent decade whose consequences we still feel today.
