  • Paper quality
  • Was it easy to read?
  • Was it interesting enough?
  • I liked the writing style
  • I would read a book by the same author
  • I would recommend it for reading
  • The novel is more "grounded" and mature, compared to the impression one might get from its description. One of the author's best works, along with Gates of Fire and Winds of War.

Update: The Greek translation is disappointing. The translator probably had not studied the book's subject matter properly, so all the relevant terminology suffers.

Description & Specifications

Year 2032. The third Iran-Iraq war has come to an end; the bombing attack on 11/11 in Long Beach, California, is a bad memory; Saudi Arabia has recently suppressed a coup attempt; Russians and Turks are clashing in the Caspian Basin; Iranian armored units, with the support of their Chinese allies' satellite and unmanned forces, are abandoning their enclaves and moving south in an attempt to reclaim the resource-rich area they believe was stolen from them by Lukoil, BP, and ExxonMobil with their private armies.

The Intervention Force has a monopoly on mercenaries. Its leader is the disgraced former U.S. Marine General James Salter, who was deposed by the President for threatening the Chinese with nuclear holocaust and now lives in exile in the Middle East. Particularly skilled in military and political planning, Salter manages to seize vast regions with oil and gas reserves, thus becoming the most powerful man on the planet. His ultimate goal is to take revenge on those responsible for his exile and return to his homeland... as a Marshal.

The only one who can stop him is Gilbert "Jed" Gentilome, Salter's most loyal mercenary and closest ally, who is also the narrator of the story. Featuring an exceptionally impressive research on military tactics and infused with the indelible themes of honor and bravery of warriors that characterize all of Pressfield's novels, "The Professional" is one of those rare novels that remain indelibly etched in the reader's memory...

The "master storyteller" and author of the major bestsellers "Gates of Fire," "The Afghan Campaign," and "Killing Rommel" returns with a stunning, chillingly convincing thriller set in the near future...
