Is "science" in conflict with "religion"? Have they always been in a conflicting relationship? What are, after all, "science" and "religion"? The discussion about science and religion, the boundaries between them, their potential coexistence, or an everlasting battle between them, is always present in public discourse — in Greece and internationally.

Typically, these two terms, science and religion, are considered self-evident and somewhat eternal, meaning that their projection in historical phases other than our own is not anachronistic. However, the history of ideas and the history of science and religion, as an academic field, has made significant advances in the last three decades, which demonstrate that this usage of the terms is inaccurate and anachronistic.

"Science" and "religion," as the concepts are used today, are modern constructs — with their earlier paths being far more complex than is usually believed, and projecting their modern content onto this older historical path is entirely anachronistic.

The book “Beyond Science and Religion: New Philosophical and Historical Approaches” brings together contributions from historians of science, philosophers of religion, and theologians, arising from the international research initiative After Science and Religion: Rethinking the Foundations of Science-Religion Discourse, and sheds light on the historical evolution of the terms and fields of knowledge, contemplating their future prospects.

With chapters by Peter Harrison, Bernard Lightman, D. C. Schindler, Michael Hanby, Paul Tyson, John Milbank, David Bentley Hart, Sotiris Mitralexis, and a postscript by Athanasios S. Fokas, this is an endeavor to radically reframe the discussion beyond what we usually consider obvious, bringing the Greek reader into contact for the first time.
