Description

1999: Harry Hole mistakenly shoots an American secret agent during President Clinton's visit to Norway. While waiting for his humiliating dismissal from the police force, Hole is transferred to the anti-terrorist unit and gets promoted to inspector. He is assigned to a mundane office and sifts through reports on seemingly insignificant cases. However, the case that falls into his hands is of particular interest: a rare and unusual type of weapon, suitable for executions, is being smuggled into Norway. Following its trail, Hole will confront the world of arms smuggling, Norwegian neo-Nazis, and the darkest aspect of Norwegian history - the collaboration of Norwegians with Hitler on the Eastern Front during World War II. Meanwhile, a determined killer spreads death, seeking justice...

"One of the most captivating inspectors in contemporary crime fiction." ("Library Journal")

"This book uses the passions of the present to support an extremely disturbing argument: when we silence history, it is as if we are provoking it to repeat itself... A well-written and multi-layered thriller."

Review this product
  • Paper quality
  • I liked the writing style
  • I would read a book by the same author
  • Was it relatively easy to read?
  • Was it relatively interesting?
  • I might recommend it for reading
  • From the very good books with the protagonist being Nesbo, it starts stories that are engaging and continue in the next ones, so it is good to be read from the first ones

  • Both "Cockroaches" and "The Bat" had disappointed me as readings. It was like something was missing from them. "The Redbreast" greatly improved the negatives that the first two books had created for me with an exceptional story that starts from the trenches of World War II and the siege of Leningrad and reaches its finale in Norway. Here we are introduced for the first time to Rakel and the "beloved" Tom Waaler. Also, for the first time, we see Harry Hole exclusively operating in Norway. If you want to start strong on the journey with Nesbo's books, start from here and ignore the first two.
