55 MILLION COPIES SOLD WORLDWIDE

1944: In the trenches outside Leningrad, on the Eastern Front, a handful of Norwegians in German military uniforms are fighting for a sacred cause: a free Norway. They come from completely different social and political backgrounds. The bravest of all, Daniel Gudeson, falls dead from a bullet, and his body is buried in a mass grave. Shortly thereafter, in a military hospital in Vienna, a wounded soldier is being treated under the name Daniel Gudeson. There he will meet love in the form of Helene, a nurse. When the wounded man receives orders to head to the southern section of the Eastern Front, that is, a ticket to death, he and Helene will plan their escape.

1999: An elderly man wanders the streets of Oslo. Just before, his doctor has informed him that he has a few months left to live. He thinks about World War II. He knows he has one last mission to complete before he dies.

Harry Hole mistakenly shoots an American secret agent during President Clinton's visit to Norway. While awaiting his humiliating dismissal from the police force, Hole is transferred to the anti-terrorism unit (known as POT) and gets promoted. He is shoved into a dimly lit office and flips through reports on low-priority cases. However, the case that lands in his hands is particularly intriguing: a gang of arms dealers likely has ties to both old and new Nazis. A veteran from the Eastern Front of World War II is found murdered, and Harry Hole discovers evidence linking him not only to the present and recent past but also to the near future, and that is the most disturbing part...

"The thing is, if the winter is mild, they can choose the best nests before the others even return," said Elen, as she tried to squeeze the thermos into the already full glove compartment of the car. "You see, it's a calculated risk. Either you'll be laughing your head off afterwards or you'll be buried deep in shit. You either take the risk or you don't. If you take the risk, you might fall off your branch some freezing night and not thaw out until spring. If you chicken out, you might not find a place for your nest when you finally come back. That's, as always, the eternal dilemma you have to face." "You're wearing a bulletproof vest, right?" Harry turned to look for himself. "Are you wearing one or not?"

  • Was it relatively easy to read?
  • Was it relatively interesting?
  • I might recommend it for reading
  • From the very good books with the protagonist being Nesbo, it starts stories that are engaging and continue in the next ones, so it is good to be read from the first ones

  • Both "Cockroaches" and "The Bat" had disappointed me as readings. It was like something was missing from them. "The Redbreast" greatly improved the negatives that the first two books had created for me with an exceptional story that starts from the trenches of World War II and the siege of Leningrad and reaches its finale in Norway. Here we are introduced for the first time to Rakel and the "beloved" Tom Waaler. Also, for the first time, we see Harry Hole exclusively operating in Norway. If you want to start strong on the journey with Nesbo's books, start from here and ignore the first two.
