Description & Specifications

Hans Giebenrat is an exceptionally gifted teenager born in a picturesque village in the Black Forest in the early last century. His extraordinary abilities in Ancient Greek and Latin attract the intense interest of his teachers, while simultaneously alienating him from everything that constitutes the framework for a smooth transition from childhood to adulthood.

After successfully passing the relevant exams, he begins attending the Theological School of Maulbronn, where strict school discipline and order come into conflict with his personal fervent need for freedom. The educational system and its excessive demands crush the young teenager, violently pulling him away from the small joys of childhood, distancing him from the beauty of nature, effectively forbidding him any relationship with his peers, ultimately leading him to destruction.

Nearly a whole century later, Beneath the Wheel serves as a scathing, sarcastic, yet simultaneously lyrical indictment against parents and educators who, blinded by their personal ambitions, are unable to empathize with the sensitivities and needs of the vulnerable adolescent soul.
