The second volume records the descent into tragedy, which led to the Destruction of Smyrna and the withdrawal of the Greek Army along with 1.5 million refugees. Mr. Kargakos attributes the descent to populism and the inability of the Greek political leadership to understand what moves should have been made in the newly formed international environment from 1920 onwards.
Lloyd George's support was not the same as Britain's support as was believed, while Russia under Lenin was strengthening Kemal and France and Italy were also supporting him because they saw in the new Turkey a significant market for their products.
Mr. Kargakos's work adds a significant asset to the bibliography on the Asia Minor Campaign, with a sober tone, a disposition for objectivity, and a thoughtful approach to the passions of that time, offering the reader a book that can excellently serve as an introduction for those unfamiliar with verified facts and careful judgments. Something that is neither easy nor common in Greek bibliography.
