This project is a collective effort for a modern rendering of a fundamental event for contemporary Greeks. It is the first attempt in many years at a synthetic approach to 1821 and the early years of the free state.
The volume concerning the ideological currents of the time intersects the Modern Greek Enlightenment of Paschalis Kitromilidis with the Ottoman perspective on benevolent authority from the Greek-speaking scholar of the Ottoman archives in Istanbul, Sukru Ilicak. This is the first time the views of Sultan Mahmud II and his court regarding the Greek Revolution have been brought to light in historical science.
Elena Angelomati-Tsougaraki writes about pre-revolutionary Greek society, Thanos Veremis and Giannis Kolios discuss the reasons that led Greeks to the Revolution, Iakovos Michailidis describes the military and political events that follow, and younger scholars, Sotiroula Vasileiou, Konstantinos Iiapanikolaou, and Rozi Angelaki, examine the loans of Independence, the management of state power by Kapodistrias, and the period from the assassination of the Governor to the arrival of King Otto.
