Description

“Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” Catherine Earnshaw develops a special bond with her foster brother, the young orphan Heathcliff. A bond that will destroy everything in its path over the coming decades.

After the death of their father, the eldest son of the Earnshaw family takes charge of the estate, which includes the Wuthering Heights manor, and the balance of power is shaken. Heathcliff is repeatedly humiliated and is stripped of all freedom. Catherine thinks that she must marry someone worthy of her, with education and social standing, that is, all that Heathcliff lacks.

Upon hearing the news, Heathcliff disappears from their lives. Three years later, a wealthy gentleman with refined manners appears at Wuthering Heights. However, behind the kind facade lies his hatred for the family that humiliated him and an insatiable thirst for revenge. A revenge that threatens to destroy even his own life. A revenge fueled by a “demonic” love.

Excerpt from the unique writing of Emily Bronte: Be with me always – in whatever form – even if you drive me mad! Only don’t leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh my God, it is unbearable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!

"Come, then, take any form you wish and come drive me mad! Only do not leave me in this abyss where I cannot find you!" - Heathcliff

Heathcliff is an orphan boy who is adopted by the Earnshaw family. With Catherine Earnshaw, they begin a stormy and deep relationship, but she chooses to marry Edgar Linton for social advancement. Heathcliff is deeply hurt and dedicates his life to taking revenge on those he considers responsible for his misery.

A dark and obsessive love that, over time, managed to remain indelible and today is considered one of the greatest loves of all time.
Heathcliff and Catherine did not live their love beautifully and romantically as it should be, but sick and obsessive exactly as they deserved, because they were alike... Their souls were made of the same material, from the same dark and sick material that kept them united through the centuries.

This is the third time I am reading this book and I admit that especially the first time it troubled me quite a bit. I consider it a very heavy book that requires thought, time, and analysis to understand all the messages and emotions it wants to convey to you.
On the second reading things were much better, while now on the third I was finally able to enjoy it exactly as I should and understand the depth of the contrasts and the story.

It is one of those classic books that is definitely worth reading at least once in your life, ideally at a time when you are mature enough as a reader to fully understand the story.

It is worth noting that the author uses very beautiful symbolism and contrasts throughout the book and also refers to class division, which still concerns humanity today.
