Description

Description

One hundred years after the assassination of Ionnas Dragoumis, the publication of his diary notebooks remains incomplete; ten of his twenty-four notebooks, preserved at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, have not been published. The "hidden" diaries (October 1912–August 1913) include most of the partially published Notebook number 18 and concern a critical historical period: the diplomat Ionnas Dragoumis serves as a reserve infantry sergeant, assigned in the role of political advisor at the General Staff, and closely observes the events unfolding.

The historical time is dense: the opportunistic alliances of the First Balkan War against a crumbling Ottoman Empire; the assassination of King George I in Thessaloniki; the ascension to the throne of Constantine I; Eleftherios Venizelos who rises to power; the annexation of new territories to Greece; the collapse of the vision of "Orientalism" that Athanasios Souliotis-Nikolaidis, Ionnas Dragoumis, and others had strived to realize since 1908 with the "Organization of Constantinople." In the pages of Notebook 18, written in vigorous Greek, both the contribution of Ionnas Dragoumis to the feverish processes during the liberation of Thessaloniki and his subsequent initiatives (such as the proposal to the government for the capture of Kavala and the order for the occupation of Kastellorizo) are highlighted.

One can recognize here his unyielding temperament, the unconventional character of his life. One sees his love affair with the young actress Marika Kotopouli at perhaps the best moment. The more mature change in his intellectual journey begins to unfold. The reader will be called to assess Dragoumis's political foresight on issues that were judged then, yet continue to have an impact to this day.
