Lorca's Don Perlimplín and Belisa... "borrows" the basic story of the folk pamphlet, but only to overturn it fundamentally and give it a tragic essence. The rich, ugly, awkward old fellow Don Perlimplín of Lorca... is the only Perlimplín in the world who did not make... a Perlimplinian career!

He lives alone, cared for by an old housekeeper who looks after him, in his grand, large, awkward house, surrounded by countless books that keep him company during the cold winter nights... and he can't even imagine what it means to be called Don Perlimplín.

Opposite the house of the last Spanish hidalgo, Don Perlimplín, a beautiful young girl comes to reside who, with her fateful name, Belisa, seems to have emerged from the pages of Lope de Vega and brings with her all the "dowry" of a mythical persona.

She is the embodiment of the "siren," the eternal woman, the elusive, unfaithful, desired little mistress! She embodies all the hidden, unfulfilled desires of Perlimplín and presents to him the living female form that irresistibly attracts and seduces him: the folk "doll" Belisa. It seems that the time for his own "love who is incapable of fighting" has finally arrived!

Or it is as if the demon that had been trying in vain for so long to tempt Don Quixote by showing him beautiful, sunlit, real landscapes of naked women, while he had eyes only for his eternal, nonexistent, and ideal beloved, Dulcinea, now turned its penetrating gaze upon Perlimplín!

Here at this exact point, the moment the hero of the folk pamphlet "hallelujah" meets the heroine of Lope, our parentheses close, and Lorca's work begins. In the... wooden fellow who became a man through his love, the viewer recognizes a facet of their betrayed self. They do not know whether to laugh or cry at the hero's misfortunes, but now they surely know firsthand... what it means to be called Don Perlimplín.
