In 1960, Jack Kerouac was on the verge of breaking down. Driven to madness by the constant attention from the press following the release of "On the Road," he needed to "get away for some solitude or die," so he retreated to a cabin in Big Sur, California. The result is a novel in which the autobiographical hero Jack Duluoz struggles with doubt, alcohol dependency, and the desire for self-destruction. It is one of Kerouac's most personal and honest works. Ending with the poem "Sea: Sounds of the Pacific Ocean at Big Sur," it depicts a man coming down from his corrupt youth and trying to come to terms with fame, the world, and himself.
