Born in Florence in 1469, Niccolò Machiavelli served as the chief secretary of the Signoria in Florence and undertook diplomatic missions to various courts before his imprisonment and exile. In this book, which could be described as a classic, he examines "what a principality is, what types exist, how they can be acquired, how they can be maintained, and why they are lost." This work was written during a time of crisis when Machiavelli considered the situation in Italy so desperate that he could hope for salvation only through the intervention of a strong prince.
