What is happening in art in the early 21st century? The answer to this question cannot ignore the challenges faced by the contemporary visual art scene due to the now-familiar globalization. In this study, art historian and author Angela Dimitrakaki attempts a theoretical approach to the initial question by observing the rise and fall of postmodernism and the multifaceted resurgence of practices that focus on the socioeconomic field.
Entitled Transpositions, the first part of the essay examines the ideological texture of postmodernism as the first period of contemporary art, peaking in the 1980s, the transitional 1990s, and the prominent role of curatorial narratives through the landmark exhibition Documenta II (2002) regarding the turn of art towards globalization.
Entitled Tendencies, Attempts, Transcendences, the second part of the essay examines the social practices of the lens (photography and moving image), the emergence of a new anti-capitalist feminism through the flourishing of video-essay, the unprecedented emphasis of art on labor and the social subjects it shapes. The second part concludes with an examination of the aesthetic, ethical, and political dilemmas generated by the rise of socially engaged artwork, as well as the persistent guarding of art within the conventional institutional space of the exhibition.
Addressing the general public as well as those who maintain closer ties to the visual arts, this study fills a gap in the Greek literature on art history and theory. Mostly focused on developments in the international arena, this theoretical approach to art in the era of globalization is particularly of interest to students, educators, and researchers.
