The one-act plays of Tennessee Williams are the subject of study in theater schools, where they are presented as a study in condensed theatrical language.

Williams, like Pirandello, Miller, and others, crafts characters and through them conveys his messages in an indirect way. In particular, Williams lends himself to study and analysis, as in his one-act plays the heroes start from a point in the past knowing that their journey has no end, or, if it does, that end is a dead end.

Most of his heroes try to find some sort of escape - any escape - but they fail, as they are haunted by the anxiety of loneliness that has flared up inside them, which leads them to a frantic verbal chase of some chimera, thus making it difficult for them to control the flow of their thoughts.
