Description

The word "yermo" is an adjective in the Spanish language. It comes from the Latin "eremus," which is none other than the Greek "έρημος," sometimes pronounced "έρμος" and "γέρμος." The feminine form of "yermo" is "yerma." By pure coincidence, the Spanish word "yerma" happens to be homophonous with the Greek word "γέρμα," which means "slope, west, sunset, end." In this drama, therefore, the tragedy of the central heroine, Yerma, begins with her ambiguous name. A woman follows her primal instinct with tragic consequences for herself and for everyone around her, in a journey of self-discovery at dizzying speed and shocking climax.

The plot of the work:
In a Greek border village of Epirus in 2019, Yerma, a married woman, faces the outcry of her social environment due to her infertility. Her ardent and obsessive desire for motherhood and fertility will lead her to surpass the limits and morals of the closed society she lives in. Yerma reaches an impasse and makes her revolution: she kills her husband and along with him the values he represents. This violent, blind, and self-destructive outburst expresses her deep desire for a life free of conventional and soul-destroying relationships. Written in 1934, "Yerma" is one of the three lyrical works of Lorca, known as the "Agricultural Trilogy," in which the author addresses the issue of women's subjugation to the norms and traditions of patriarchal societies, seeking freedom and equality. In Greece, the play was first presented in the 1960s by the National Theatre, directed and translated by Alexis Solomos. "Yerma" is a lyrical hymn to fertility, motherhood, and the social oppression of women. Lorca explores the essential needs of his characters, denouncing the agony of deprivation and disconnection, which leads to death, addressing every society regardless of the era.
