Epictetus is considered the father of the basic principles of psychotherapy. According to him, there is only one way to be happy, and that is to stop concerning ourselves with things beyond our control.
He belonged to the class of slaves and was freed in old age. He recognized that daily life is full of difficulties, and for this reason, he spent his life aiming for completion and tranquility. His imperturbability and calmness were legendary. It is said that his master, to test Epictetus's apathy, cut the flesh of his shin with a sharp instrument. Then the slave philosopher turned and said apathetically to his torturer: "You will break it." And when indeed, his bone was broken, Epictetus added: "I told you so." From then on, he remained lame!
His behavior was that of an open-hearted, humble teacher who encouraged his students to learn to live wisely, taking their lives seriously, and he himself was the best example for them!
