"A paradoxical circus. An exploratory journey. The story of human footsteps on Earth. Just before traveling with the performance "The Great Tamer" around the world, Dimitris Papaioannou returns to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center to "tame" our senses."
In his thirty-year career, Papaioannou strives to create a scenic universe that could be described as a dreamlike circus of the absurd. Human bodies are transformed into battlefields, interact with primary materials, and metamorphose into hybrid forms, aiming to create visual illusions. His deep roots in the visual arts give his performances a strong visual sense, as he playfully incorporates references from Art History, various expressive and performative practices, as well as questions about our origins. Dimitris Papaioannou aims for the ultimate simplicity of appearance, which is by no means simple in its implementation. His intention is to highlight the sanctity inherent in everything mundane and unremarkable.
