This letter was probably written between November 10th and November 19th, 1919, due to Kafka's father's refusal to consent to Franz's marriage to Julie Wohryzek, which was scheduled for the end of the month. In any case, Franz intended to write it before leaving for Selezin on November 4th. It consisted of 103 handwritten pages. Franz's marriage to a simple secretary was unacceptable to his father. He even suggested that Franz take him to a brothel to relieve himself. Such a thing would be preferable to his son marrying "anyone". This insult was the best opportunity for Franz to clarify things with his father, to protect his dignity, and to lead to a historical reflection on their traumatic relationship. However, the term "anyone" was not related to Julie's social position, but to rumors about her love life, which Hermann Kafka had taken the trouble to investigate by hiring a private detective agency, something he had not hesitated to do in the case of Franz's relationship with Felice Bauer.
