Description

Awarded the London Hellenic Prize 2022, this book serves as an essential guide to the significant Greek War of Independence from the Ottoman Empire, 200 years after the Greek Revolution.

The Greek struggle for independence (1821–1830) is often overlooked in discussions of the Age of Revolutions. However, the revolution against Ottoman rule had a profound impact in its time, with its reverberations felt in modern history. The Greeks inspired others to cast off the oppression that developed as an impact of the French Revolution, while Europeans were not mere bystanders to the image of Christian subjects overthrowing Muslim rulers.

In this collection of essays, Paschalis Kitromilides and Constantinos Tsoukalas bring together scholars who examine the many facets of the Greek Revolution and place it within the revolutionary era. An impressive list of contributors covers the revolution as it unfolded and analyzes its regional and transnational effects, including the revolutions in Romania and Serbia that spread the spirit of the Greek uprising across the Balkans.

The essays also highlight the religious and cultural dimensions of Greek nationalism, including the power of the Orthodox Church. One essay examines the prevalence of the idea of the Greek "homeland," which linked the Greek diaspora—and its financial contributions—to the revolutionary cause. Another essay analyzes the Ottoman response, which included a series of reforms in the imperial army and belief system.

Distinguished scholars cover key personalities of the revolution, events as interpreted in the press, art, literature, and music, as well as the influence of intellectual movements such as Philhellenism and the Enlightenment. Competent and accessible, the book "The Greek Revolution" affirms the profound political significance and enduring cultural legacies of a defining event in world history.
