Description

From the glittering halls of Versailles and the "Paris of hope" to the blood-soaked lands of Asia Minor, from Smyrna, Constantinople, Eskisehir, Afyonkarahisar, the Salty Desert, and the Sangarios to the unknown Greece of everyday life, carefreeness, daily wages, poverty, and hope.

From the "hosannas" and "blessed is he who comes" to the desperate cry "Yunanlar geliyorlar" (the Greeks are coming) and from the last liturgy of Chrysostom in the wandering Romiosyni of refugee life. The epic of the Asia Minor campaign and the thorny crown of the uprooted to the Nemesis of people and history.

With protagonists, bloodied pawns in the fingers of fate: Venizelos, Alexander, Constantine, Gounaris, Protopapas, Baltatzis, Theotokis, Stratos, Hadjanestis, Paraskeyopoulos, Papoulas, Plastiras, Pangalos, Chrysostom, Aristides Stergiadis, and others.

A book that is read breathlessly as the shocking events unfold with cinematic speed. What did the Greeks do to make the Turks want to reclaim their blood with such hatred? What was truly happening on the shores of Smyrna that day of fire and death? And what did the people in Greece learn about all this?

The edition is complemented by rare photographs of the Asia Minor Campaign by the Serres photographer Serafim V. Serafim from the archives of the magazine Giati.

STATE AWARD OF TESTIMONY - CHRONICLE 2008 NEW ENRICHED AND REVISED EDITION OF THE BOOK Tearful Minor Asia 1919-1922. The years that shook Greece.

The port of Smyrna was now flooded with a heap of multinational vessels: battleships, cruisers, destroyers, caiques, cargo ships, lighters, boats, and its waterfront, from Punta to the recently Greek administrative headquarters, was crowded with a homeless, tyrannized crowd begging for their salvation...

At all hours, the paved and clean Parisian streets were filled with a huge colorful crowd. People felt an unprecedented inner ecstasy that drove them crazy. The flags of the victors waved on the facades of houses, on balconies, on lampposts to the right and left on the curbs of the Seine. Many who had fought on various fronts wrapped their pride with the tricolor of France, even as they begged for their daily bread outside the noisy bistros where the revelry would continue for months. Flags had been hoisted on all public buildings, hung from the roofs of houses, or fluttered atop cars.
