Description

The book "The Acropolis Through Its Museum" is not just a guide to the Acropolis Museum. By presenting the artworks displayed in the museum, it aims to reconstruct the history of the Sacred Rock as part of the cultural and broader historical process of Athens.

The book follows the visitor's tour of the museum so that the reader can study and learn more about the antiquities they see before them. However, it is written in such a way that through independent research, the reader can delve deeper into the issues and understand the conditions—political, social, economic, ideological, artistic, and technological—that led to the creation of the unique monuments of the Acropolis.

The book is richly illustrated with photographs, as well as many design and reconstruction depictions, which help the reader understand each of the fragmentarily preserved works in their context.

Additionally, it answers many questions that arise in the mind of the discerning reader, such as what was the size and population of ancient Athens, what is the meaning of the beasts depicted in the grand Archaic pediments, what do the Korai represent, why was the Erechtheion so complex, and what was the role of the Caryatids, why was the temple of Athena Nike built in Ionic style, what led Pericles and his advisors to choose this specific building program, how were the large public works funded, why was the placement of the Ionic frieze decided for the Doric Parthenon, what political messages were conveyed to Sparta through the sculptural decoration of the Parthenon, and many more.
