Description

Description

One of the most important military books of the twentieth century. By a distinguished soldier with an independent spirit, it advanced the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for the German superiority in tanks at the beginning of the Second World War. Published in 1937, it is the result of 15 years of careful study from his days in the German General Staff during the First World War. Achtung Panzer! argues how critical the proper use of tanks and supporting armored vehicles is in conducting a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers in a distinguished manner in the campaigns against Poland, France, and Russia. The Panzer warfare had evolved just as he had predicted. This is the first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book—used as a manual by Panzer officers during the war—with an introduction and extensive footnotes by contemporary English historian Paul Harris.

Review this product
  • A classic military work, essential for anyone who wants to understand the evolution of tactics and warfare in the 20th century.

It is not literature; it is a historical reading and at the same time a military manual, which explains how mechanized warfare was born. Guderian connects his experiences from World War I with the new technologies of the Interwar period (tanks, mechanized infantry, wireless communication) and presents a coherent vision for the war of the future.

The value of the book is that it does not remain theoretical: it proved prophetic, as in 1939–1940 the Wehrmacht successfully applied almost to the letter what is described. Poland and France experienced in practice the speed, surprise, and cooperation of tanks-infantry-air force that Guderian had designed.

Today it remains an interesting and instructive read, both militarily and historically: it shows how a theoretical officer was able to radically change military thinking.

However, we must remember that it is a product of its time: it was published in 1937 in Nazi Germany, and although it has enormous military value, it is not ideologically neutral.
