The B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston presents the exhibition "Still Life: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Tradition and Innovation".
From the great Flemish school to Impressionism, Modernism, and contemporary art. 48 works on the theme of still life exclusively from the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The works of important European and American painters span five centuries of artistic creation, from the 16th to the 21st century. Among the artists who have signed them are: Edouard Vuillard, Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Henri Matisse, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Jean Metzinger, James Ensor, Giorgio Morandi, Juan Gris, and Georgia O'Keeffe.
Still life existed as a subject in ancient painting and reappeared as an independent genre in the late 16th century. Due to its unlimited possibilities and the choices it allows, still life lends itself to artistic experimentation.
The exhibition includes, among others, tabletop still life, vanitas still life, trompe l'oeil, works on the theme of trophies and hunting exhibits, paintings that express Oriental influences and minimalist tendencies.
The exhibition was funded by Greece and the European Union, within the framework of the NSRF 2007-2013. It was curated by Ronni Baer, Takis Mavrotas, and Eliza Polychroniadou.
