Description

The managed switch from TP-LINK is mainly recommended for large professional networks and not for small and home networks. It offers the ability to configure its parameters by the admin of a network regarding security, traffic priority, remote error correction, and other features. It has 8 ethernet ports with a maximum speed of 1Gbps. It features Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, which allows it to simultaneously transmit power and data over an Ethernet cable. Before choosing a switch with PoE, you need to know how much power your devices consume. This specific one has PoE (802.3af), providing 15.4W per port, suitable for connecting phones and IP cameras.

Excellent switch for its price, probably the best in its category (and I thoroughly researched them all). The web interface is good and the CLI even better, Cisco-like. It is fully managed, and has everything one might want from L2 (PoE, VLANs, Spanning Tree, L2/L3 QoS, bandwidth control, voice VLAN, LAGs, logging, SNMP, NTP), even good security features. If it weren't so small in size and I connected to it blindly, it would seem like a business class switch. Of course, it is not an L3 switch, but at this price it's a bit difficult to be L3 as well. The hardware version V5 is fully supported by the Omada SDN controllers. It doesn't have 2.5G, but such switches are 2 to 3 times more expensive, at least the branded ones.

Fantastic in functionality, with the use of OC200 I no longer need to deal with the configuration of my switches/APs.

This review is about the network version: v1

Excellent switch for its price, probably the best in its category (and I thoroughly researched them all). Contrary to what the manufacturer writes, it is fully managed. The web interface is good and the CLI is even better (it is even Cisco compatible). It has everything one might want from L2 features (PoE, VLANs, Spanning Tree, L2 and L3 QoS, bandwidth control, voice VLAN, LAGs, logging, SNMP, NTP), even good security features. If it weren't so small in size and I connected to it blindly, it would seem like a business class switch. Of course, it is not an L3 switch, but with 100 euros it's a bit difficult to be L3 as well.
[update] After a period of standalone use, I added it to the Omada platform I got, with the OC200 hardware controller and two EAP245 access points. Although the switch lost its more advanced capabilities and direct management, it gained all the major advantages of the platform for centralized management (locally and/or via cloud) of the network and many management capabilities for security, traffic, and usage, as well as monitoring statistics, traffic, events, alerts, etc.
[update 2025] TP-Link stopped supporting this switch in Omada. This is a general problem with the company. They release newer hardware versions and stop supporting the old ones. I was forced to replace it.
