Description

The fundamental and guiding principle of the book you hold in your hands is the connection of the science of Viticulture with viticultural practice, a challenging task due to the breadth of the subject matter and the continuous and rapid developments at both theoretical and research levels.

Viticultural texts, monographs, and the vast number of published research papers and studies, especially over the past twenty-five years, part of which is cited in the extensive bibliography, provide a measure of the scientific knowledge that has been accumulated and the degree of its utilization in viticultural techniques.

This edition is primarily aimed at students of university and technological departments of Agricultural Schools, as well as others where the subject of Viticulture is taught, to fellow agronomists and oenologists, and to Greek viticulturists, with the ambition to contribute to this fundamental principle, which is also a prerequisite for the development of Greek viticulture.

The edition includes nine sections, covering all the individual subject areas of, according to traditional terminology, General and Special Viticulture, specifically the History and origin of the vine, Morphology and anatomy, Annual growth cycle, Reproduction, Developmental physiology, Propagation, Establishment of a productive vineyard, Pruning, and Annual cultivation care of the vine – soil management, green pruning, fertilization, irrigation, harvesting – as well as two important chapters referring to the processing and packaging of table grapes and the technology of raisin production from the Corinthian Raisin and Sultanina varieties.

The texts are accompanied by more than 400 original photographs, most of which are an illustrated record by the author in the Greek vineyard. Each with its own story and unique emotional memory load provides a measure of the developments in viticultural techniques in the main viticultural areas of Greece.
