The charioteer’s soul descends from the mountains, the limits and boundaries of time, to navigate its movements in the valleys and plains of earthly reality.

The charioteer’s soul wonders: May the times, which it captured during its ecstatic journey, when observing the movement of the sun and the bright stars in the sky, as well as the shadows on the Earth, have a connection to the three parts of its soul, the rational, the spirited, and the appetitive?

The movement of the celestial sphere as a whole provided the charioteer’s soul with a double aspect with regard to its object, on one hand the lesson of unified cyclical time and on the other its division into past, present, and future.

The mind alone is worthy to conceive simultaneously the unified and the fragmented. Thus, the rational part of the soul, as the ruler of the dual nature of time, must govern the two irrational parts of the soul.
