Description

In the early 1950s, in a village of Upper Riza, a young boy discovers, at the funeral of a relative, that he has the ability to hear the thoughts of the dead. No one believes him at first, but when he publicly proves the truth of his claims, an uncle of his, realizing the economic exploitation opportunities that lie ahead, convinces him to leave the village and start touring the villages of the plain, reaching far to the foothills of the Lasithi mountains and then to the capital, offering their services as "interpreters of the dead".

From village to village and from funeral to funeral, each dead person tells their own story, reveals their own secrets, and gives their own answers to the riddle of existence. The only thing is that the dead always tell the truth, and the living do not want to hear the truth.

"The next was Sunday and, as they always did, he had set off early in the morning with his mother and sister for church. Naturally, the events of the previous day at the funeral of old-Xofia had spread from mouth to mouth and were the main topic of discussion throughout the village. On the way to Saint George's, but also inside the church, when he lit the candle and then stood before the altar along with the other men, all eyes turned to him without a trace of mockery now, but charged with concern, awe, or fear, while their lips whispered as he passed in front of them: 'He speaks with the dead!', 'He hears the deceased!'

It's worth reading. A different book with a nice plot and humor. I read it in 5 days.

I expected to read a period mystery novel; instead, this is pornography with detailed sex descriptions in every chapter. The story promised by the title and the back cover summary is simply in the background. Pure disappointment, only good for those who want to read porn but are ashamed to admit it.

  • Very good book, I would like to see it as a movie but it's difficult to happen due to its subject matter.. Amazing writing, you never get bored for a minute, it cleverly intertwines reflections on life and its real values with the impact of death and existential loneliness... and all this with biting humor. It is not for those sensitive to spicy scenes, profanity, etc.

The way it is written is as if you see the whole plot unfolding before you. It takes you to Crete of the 1950s, giving you a very clear picture of the era, even if you have no connection to the place. It makes special mention of the life and oppression of women of the time, through its unique humor, which often flirts with... blasphemy!

  • It is a book that should become a movie.
Apart from making you burst out laughing, it has suspense, emotion, love scenes, and escalation, all through the eyes of a fifteen-year-old in post-war Crete who raises grand questions about what we expect and what we do in our lives.
I wish I had read it as a teenager, but at least I can give it to my children.

It is a must read. Especially for those who love Crete but also the history of modern Greece with an objective perspective.

If you want to read a soft porn book and you want to pass your time, it's an okay book. The only reason I finished it and didn't leave it halfway was because I was curious to know the ending, which really wasn't anything. Very mediocre book
