Description

Was there really a statue of Hans Christian Andersen half-submerged in the waters of a harbor? Was there perhaps a child who was enchanted by fairy tales and disappointed by life? And what happened that night on the birthday of the great Danish storyteller?

Storytellers from all over the world, it is said, can confirm this incredible tale. As, of course, can that child who saw with his own eyes all those wonders that took place. Many, of course, will continue to disbelieve it, claiming that neither statues nor children nor, of course, fairy tales are worth paying much attention to.

But all the others… once they learn the story, will surely swear that they lived it themselves. Inspired by the story of the statue of the great Danish storyteller created by the sculptor Jens Galschiøt and submerged in the waters of the harbor of Odense.

Read an excerpt

Half-submerged in the waters, at the edge of the harbor of his hometown, stood the statue of Hans Christian Andersen. Many would pause and look at it in wonder. Some shook their heads disapprovingly. Others chuckled – probably out of awkwardness. A few murmured that the sculptor who had made that statue wanted to protest to the authorities in this way. Many photographed it. And then all of them… continued on their way. But there was also that child… That child believed that the statue was there because Andersen, when he was alive, loved very much, besides children, fairy tales and water. Just like that child.
