Description

The collapse of the European dream and the dissolution of the post-war order in a tragically timely book. Picking up the thread from the end of In Europe, at the beginning of the new millennium, the award-winning journalist and author Geert Mak examines the unprecedented challenges faced by Europe's values.

We learn about Putin's carefully orchestrated career, the growing fear following the terrorist attacks, the process of European Union enlargement, the "large-scale drowning of the poor of Africa" in the Mediterranean, the causes and immense costs of the banking crisis, the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Poland, the success of populist parties in Eastern and Western Europe, the great euro crisis seen from a corner of Athens, Ukraine's trajectory after 1999, and the events that led to the critical moment of our contemporary Russian invasion.

The author writes about the financial crisis and the euro crisis with detailed data and descriptions regarding the negotiations between representatives of Greek governments and the European Union Institutions, in order to avoid Grexit and find a solution to the Greek economy's debt crisis. At the same time, he conveys how the Greeks experienced and are experiencing this crisis as well as the effects of the chosen policies.

Additionally, Mak extensively discusses the refugee-migrant issue as it has been experienced by the residents of the Greek islands in the eastern Aegean: through the testimonies of locals as well as refugees, he exposes the serious problems of this humanitarian crisis in the host countries and the inability of the European Union to address them with a coordinated effort.

Combining history and politics and drawing from his interactions with many Europeans, the established author reignites the debate on Europe's identity and searches for the remnants of a common vision for peace, democracy, and prosperity.

On the streets, the economy had fallen into the hands of gangsters and the mafia in the early 1990s. In provincial towns, drug dealers no longer sold heroin but krokodil, a homemade mixture of codeine pills and certain synthetic cleaning agents. Vodka had become too expensive for millions of Russians; now they drank rubbing alcohol, chemical ethanol, or glass cleaner. I remember that my travel companions on the Red Arrow, the night train from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, during those years would tie the door handles of their compartments with a rope before sleeping. "You never know." The balance of power was determined by gang wars. The number of murders increased to about thirty per day. "I realized that this new world was not for me, but for a different kind of people," said one eyewitness, Svetlana Alexievich. "The dirt surfaced, and another revolution. The streets filled with thugs in sportswear. Wolves! They trampled over everyone."
