The Metaxas dictatorship was not merely a result of the deadlock faced by the political world in 1936, but it was the culmination of a phenomenon—the National Schism—that plagued Greece for at least two decades. However, this does not mean that the imposition of the Metaxas regime was an inevitable development. The collapse of the parliamentary system was a scenario that, by mid-1936, seemed quite likely, but it could have been avoided. This study aims to provide answers to a series of questions regarding the conditions under which the Metaxas dictatorship was imposed: To what extent did the legitimacy crisis of the democratic regime from 1915-1935 make Greece's slide into non-parliamentary solutions inevitable? What was the significance of the military issue in the path to dictatorship? Could political parties find governance solutions within the existing parliamentary framework, or did the outcome of the January 26 elections make it impossible to form a coalition government? Why did the Liberal Party initially support the "Metaxas solution" (within a parliamentary framework)? Was the "communist threat," which Metaxas cited to justify the August 4 deviation, real, or was it a pretext to extract King George II's consent for establishing a dictatorship? Years that marked Modern Greek History Historical books in which the authors tackle years that marked modern Greek history, presenting all the significant events that occurred during each of these years and demonstrating their unique significance in the course of history.

Saturday, August 1, 1936. The Olympic Stadium in Berlin, filled with 90,000 spectators, is ready to welcome the eleventh Olympic Games. A few minutes before 4:00 p.m., Adolf Hitler arrives at the stadium to the sounds of Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. Leni Riefenstahl's camera follows every step of the German chancellor – the opportunity offered by the games to promote the Nazi regime must not be missed. First, at 4:14 p.m., the Greek delegation enters, led by the evergreen Olympian Spyros Louis, who offers the German dictator an olive branch – an eternal symbol of peace. Following are the Egyptians, Afghans, Argentinians, Australians, Belgians. It is estimated that on that day more than 3,600 athletes and technical staff marched, representing 49 nations.
