Blasted (1995) is Sarah Kane's first play, and it is what placed her in the theatrical reality. As a result of this work, she received particularly harsh criticism regarding her writing.

"Blasted was a very particular journey, and I think that because it was my first play, I wasn't exactly aware of what I was doing with the form. I mean, I knew what I was doing, but I didn't have conscious awareness..." she notably states.

She struggled greatly to shake off the stigma of a writer who merely shocks through violence. Very often, the reviews she received were simplistic or superficial, while there were times when the content of her works was distorted, as some critics did not delve into them or relied on rumors.

Kane argued that her work speaks about Love, which is always tested to an extreme degree, while at the same time her Heroes are characters full of cracks, struggling to find a way out of what torments them.
