The Greek-Albanian relations have been fluctuating, tense, but also amicable (especially since 1995), although they have never really been friendly to this day, based on mutual trust and respect, which is both the goal and to the benefit of both peoples.
The Albanians and the Greeks, for most of the 20th century, have been raised with hostility towards the Other. Albanians grew up with the image of Greeks initially questioning their existence as a nation, and later seeking to seize a large part of southern Albania, which they called "Northern Epirus"; Greeks, until recently, found it impossible to understand that Orthodox Albanians are indeed Albanians.
This study focuses on six themes that are central to Greek-Albanian relations and their understanding: the beginning of Greek-Albanian relations, with the Greek Revolution, then as comrades (Arvanites with the Greeks), but also as opponents (Muslim Albanians), albeit peculiar opponents; nationalism and the national narrative of the two nations, with particular emphasis on the Albanian case, which is unknown to Greeks (except for a few specialists); the distinctive Greek-Albanian relations from 1877 to 1912; the so-called "Northern Epirus issue," with an extensive presentation of the periods 1912-1920, 1940-1967, and the early 1990s; the Greek minority in Albania; and the thorny issue of the Chams.
And the book concludes with proposals for the improvement of Greek-Albanian relations and the establishment of true friendship and good neighborliness.
