Convinced that his literary footprint is negligible, Kafka leaves explicit instructions for all his writings to be destroyed, perhaps hoping that along with them, the fears and frustrations that dictated them would dissolve. A suffocating doubt resonates underground in every page of Kafka even in the most cheerful moments of his art. This doubt and frustration are reflected in the three narratives that are anthologized in this edition.

If "In the Penal Colony" can be read as a parable for the power that insidiously contaminates human relationships –vertically and horizontally– canceling every attempt at communication, understanding, forgiveness, and compassion, "A Hunger Artist" and "Josephine the Singer," his last literary creations, reflect with clarity the tormenting thoughts that consume him just before the end.
