The second volume of "The History of Cinema" includes biographical and critical notes on approximately eight hundred directors, whose names and works summarize the historical evolution of cinema, from "The Waterer Being Watered" to the present day.
The book is a continuation of the "Dictionary of Directors of World Cinema," which accompanied a generation of film lovers from 1985 (first edition) until 1999 (fourth edition). However, the material has changed in the field of critical assessment of the creators' work, now including some Greeks with international achievements.
The directors are organized alphabetically based on the most accurate rendering of their names in Greek. Biographies of major teachers of the acting art of the 20th century (Grotowski, Meyerhold, Reinhardt, Stanislavski, Strasberg, etc.), who indirectly influenced the evolution of cinema, have also been added, along with a few biographical filmographies of great comedians.
Each entry includes a short biography and, for the most significant among them, a historical and critical assessment of their work. Their major awards at top festivals (Cannes, Venice, Berlin), the Oscars (for directing and best film), and the European Felix Awards are also mentioned.
A complete filmography follows, in which the reader can find the original title and, in parentheses, the Greek title of the film, the year of production, and the main cast. At the end of the book, there is an attached chronological table of awarded films at the largest festivals in the world.
