Both Leonidas and Lena escape from their kingdoms to avoid a predetermined marriage between them, even though they have never met.
Nevertheless, they meet as strangers, fall in love, and ironically marry like puppets, supposedly by chance replacing the Prince and Princess. Only then is the truth revealed to their great disappointment. They do whatever they mistakenly believe is their own free thought and will.
Leonidas and Lena is a true work through and through. There is a world as real beneath its surface as in Danton and Wojciech, a dreamlike world that almost always becomes intrusive with its roughness and harshness, its pessimism and fatalism. The ironic glorification of the comic vision of this abyss is found in the two final monologues of the work.
