"Sometimes something unforeseen happens, something that no one expects, a disaster, like that of Smyrna, and there you don’t know what to do." With two disparate texts coexisting in a common theatrical work titled Asia Minor, Andreas Flourakis refers to the hundred years since the Asia Minor Catastrophe.
The first text includes four monologues of contemporary teenagers, subtitled "Small Country One Century Later," and the second consists of short polyphonic scenes with the subtitle "Two Countries," which highlights an almost unknown historical event, the rescue after the collapse of the Asia Minor front of eight hundred twenty-five Greeks and Armenians by a Japanese ship.
With his new play, Andreas Flourakis connects History with the present in a unique way, while also addressing significant social and humanitarian issues. The rescue ship Tōkai Maru represents an ideal community at sea. Equality, equal rights, religious freedom, solidarity among its members, respected freedoms, equal rights, and respect for the different that contributes to the cultural wealth of the community prevail, teach, and raise awareness.
